Cognitive Algorithms for memory Optimization

Just like objects in the rearview mirror shrink as we drive forward, our brains compress past experiences as new events unfold — preserving what matters most to guide memory, decisions, and future plans. In CAO lab, we take seriously the idea that cognition emerges from the coordinated dynamics of neural populations. By combining neural data analysis with cognitive modeling, we aim to uncover the computational principles implemented in the brain. We then develop cognitive algorithms grounded in these neural mechanisms to explain and predict adaptive behavior.

Our research sits at the intersection of neuroscience, cognitive science, and computation, so there’s no single “right” background to join the lab. If you’re coming from psychology or neuroscience, some experience with programming or quantitative methods is helpful. If you’re coming from a technical field like computer science, engineering, or physics, a strong interest in how the mind and brain work is what matters most. Most of all, we’re excited to work with students who are curious, and excited to think deeply about how minds and brains work.
